#68: Tropa De Elite (Elite Squad) (2007)

“The 2012 Movie challenge . To watch at least 150 movies during this year.”
Movie #68 – 04 April 2012
Tropa De Elite (Brazil – 2007) Directed by José Padilha

Winner of the Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin festival, and celebrated at home and abroad as the prototype of the new Latin American film, Tropa de Elite is an important and violent movie that shook me deeply. The director, José Padhila (his first important work here), paints a tragic picture of the Brazilian society.
Filmed almost like a documentary and strong in its honesty in portraying the degradation of Brazil’s late ’90s, the film is an important sociological document even before art. Despite some imperfections, such as the pedantic voiceover sequences and some not so successful, I believe the film did deserve all the awards he received when he was released.
Watch it. You won’t be disappointed.
