#65: Tower Heist (2011)

“The 2012 Movie challenge . To watch at least 150 movies during this year.”
Movie #65 – 31 March 2012
Tower Heist (USA – 2011) Directed by Brett Ratner
Apple TV

Tower Heist is certainly the best film by Brett Ratner, and this tells you everything about it. With a cast like that, even Michael Bay would have created a decent work. At times funny – but we are always in a Brett’s movie where everything is half done, half explained, half funny, half dramatic and highly forgettable.

Movie #64 – 29 March 2012

“Tomboy” is a delicate and profound film, a cinematic jewel directed by the very promising Céline Sciamma.

#63: This Must Be The Place (2011)

“The 2012 Movie challenge . To watch at least 150 movies during this year.”
Movie #63 – 27 March 2012
This Must Be The Place (Italy – 2011) Directed by Paolo Sorrentino
Blu-ray

The hardest thing to do for those who write about cinema, literature or art is to separate critical from personal impressions. Let me tell you right now: Paolo Sorrentino’s film has many flaws and problems that I could list and detail with all my critical faculties, but I will not. This Must Be the Place went straight to my heart, and I’ll be so fair to confess that of all the movies I’ve seen this year it is probably my favorite, although not the best.

Movie #62 – 26 March 2012
The Artist (France – 2011) Directed by Michel Hazanavicius

Good performers and a great director make this film an universal story that does really get into the eyes and hearts of the general public (and mine). Loved it.

#61: Midnight In Paris (2011)

“The 2012 Movie challenge . To watch at least 150 movies during this year.”
Movie #61 – 25 March 2012
Midnight In Paris (USA – 2011) Directed by Woody Allen
Apple TV

Midnight In Paris is a good movie. Just a good clever movie, not great. I find the ‘masks’ of this film (and recently of all Mr Allen movies) more and more thin and predictable. Stylistically Allen is impeccable as always but the movie feels a little bit tired and flat. Waiting to find out what he’s done with his new film shot in Rome, all I can think of is New York, skyscrapers and the 70s.

Movie #60 – 25 March 2012
Footloose (USA – 2011) Directed by Craig Brewer

Why o why? Useless remake with ‘teenagers’ who look like middle aged people. Nearly frame by frame remake. For the ‘so called’ MTV generation, if there is one anymore.
