#49: Climates (2006)

Movie #49 – 28 February 2012
Climates (Turkey – 2006) Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan

A slow movie, very slow, extremely slow. The end of a love story. The end of happiness. An attempt to get back a love that had already died. It’s too late. Very Antonioni.

#48: The Change Up (2011)

Movie #48 – 26 February 2012
The Change Up (USA – 2011) Directed by David Dobkin

Not so funny. Very predictable. Parts of it are gross. Cheap “adult humour”. Decent mindless entertainment on a Sunday afternoon.

#47: The Art Of Getting By (2011)

Movie #47 – 25 February 2012
The Art Of Getting By (USA – 2011) Directed by Gavin Wiesen

“You live alone, you die alone. Everything else is just an illusion”
Despite reading negatives reviews about this movie, I liked it. The performances are great and, finally, New York is shot like it is supposed to be shown: not like a postcard. One negative note: the happy ending. But maybe it was just an illusion.

Movie #46 – 23 February 2012
Butterflies Are Free (USA – 1972) Directed by Milton Katselas

I knew the day you met me,
I could love you if you let me,
Though you touched my cheek
And said how easy you’d forget me,
You said, “Butterflies are free,
And so are we.”

#45: The Debt (2010)

“The 2012 Movie challenge . To watch at least 150 movies during this year.”
Movie #45 – 22 February 2012
The Debt (USA – 2010) Directed by John Madden

Remake of an Israeli movie from 2007, The Debt is an honest, dry and interesting spy-drama that brilliantly manages to hide its Hollywood roots leaving room for a fascinating and compelling story. Director John Madden, usually dull and wordy, this time can give The Debt an European touch, dirty and full of suspense, helped by fine performances (especially Helen Mirren and Jessica Chastain).

#44: Taking Off (1971)

“The 2012 Movie challenge . To watch at least 150 movies during this year.”
Movie #44 – 21 February 2012
Taking Off (USA – 1971) Directed by Milos Forman

Funny comedy by Milos Forman in his (if I am not mistaken) first American film. The movie is very dated even if some moments, as well as provocative, are also quite intense and handled very well without over moralising this family tragedy. Definitely not banal. A good movie, effective, semi-unknown and unexpected. The ‘joint’ group scene is hilarious. Recommended.
